10:55 pm - speechless...
Teacher allegedly cuts boy's tongue Thu Mar 1, 6:16 PM ET

A novice teacher in Milan is under criminal investigation for allegedly using scissors to cut the tongue of a second-grader for talking in class, Italian news agencies said Thursday. The 7-year-old boy, who has not been publicly identified, needed six stitches in his tongue from the Feb. 20 incident, said Piero Porciani, a lawyer for the child's parents, a Tunisian couple.

The teacher, 22, was being investigated for suspected voluntary harm of the boy, the ANSA news agency said.

The office of Milan prosecutor Marco Ghezzi said he wasn't there and couldn't give out any information about an investigation.

Porciani told The Associated Press by telephone from Milan that the teacher has been suspended from the school while the incident is investigated.

The mother has said in TV interviews that her son is exhibiting a fear of knives in the kitchen after his tongue was cut.

"He's not eating, he's not sleeping, he doesn't want to go school. He cries a lot because of the pain," Porciani said.

Italian news reports said the teacher, who was assisting the main instructor, repeatedly asked the child to be quiet when her colleague left the classroom briefly.

When the boy continued to talk and move about the classroom, the teacher allegedly told the child she would take scissors to his tongue, then told him to stick out his tongue when he refused to quiet down.

"It's an absolutely unjustifiable act that calls for zero tolerance," said Anna Maria Dominici, the school superintendent for Lombardy, the region that includes Milan.

According to Porciani, the teacher, who was not identified, said she didn't mean to cut the tongue.

Newspapers said the teacher claimed she was only joking by talking about using the scissors.

07:11 pm - who dangles a child in front of a TIGER???
Girl, 6, killed by tiger at Chinese zoo Fri Feb 23, 12:51 AM ET

A six-year-old girl was bitten to death by a tiger at a south China zoo while posing for a picture with the animal, state media reported Friday.

The girl, identified only as Ruixin, was standing behind the tiger with her mother and four other relatives when it attacked at a zoo in Yunnan province on Thursday, the official Xinhua News Agency said.

The local Chuncheng Evening News reported on its Web site that the tiger attacked the girl shortly after the flash went off on her uncle's camera. The tiger's paw shot out and grabbed Ruixin, pulling her head into its mouth, it said.

Five zoo staff beat the tiger with wood sticks and a bench until it released the girl after about one minute, it said. Ruixin's mother was also bitten on the hand while struggling to save her daughter.

The girl was taken to a local hospital but rescue efforts failed, Xinhua said.

It said the animal was one of six tigers that perform at a circus in the zoo. The photo service, has been suspended, it said.

Phones at the Yuantongshan Zoo in Yunnan's capital of Kunming, where the attack occurred, rang unanswered. It was not known if the tiger had been killed following the attack.

10:43 pm - Astronaut charged with kidnap attempt
Astronaut charged with kidnap attempt By MIKE SCHNEIDER, Associated Press Writer

An astronaut drove 900 miles and donned a disguise to confront a woman she believed was her rival for the affections of a space shuttle pilot, police said. She was arrested Monday and charged with attempted kidnapping and other counts.

U.S. Navy Capt. Lisa Nowak, 43, who flew last July on a shuttle mission to the international space station, was also charged with attempted vehicle burglary with battery, destruction of evidence and battery. She was denied bail.

Police said Nowak drove from her home in Houston to the Orlando International Airport to confront Colleen Shipman.

Nowak believed Shipman was romantically involved with Navy Cmdr. William Oefelein, a pilot during space shuttle Discovery's trip to the space station last December, police said.

Nowak told police that her relationship with Oefelein was "more than a working relationship but less than a romantic relationship," according to an arrest affidavit. Police officers recovered a love letter to Oefelein in her car.

NASA spokesman James Hartsfield in Houston said that, as of Monday, Nowak's status with the astronaut corps remained unchanged.

"What will happen beyond that, I will not speculate," he said.

Hartsfield said he couldn't recall the last time an astronaut was arrested and said there were no rules against fraternizing among astronauts.

When she found out that Shipman was flying to Orlando from Houston, Nowak decided to confront her, according to the arrest affidavit. Nowak raced from Houston to Orlando wearing diapers so she wouldn't have to stop to urinate, authorities said.

Astronauts wear diapers during launch and re-entry.

Dressed in a wig and a trench coat, Nowak boarded an airport bus that Shipman took to her car in an airport parking lot. Shipman told police she noticed someone following her, hurried inside the car and locked the doors, according to the arrest affidavit.

Nowak rapped on the window, tried to open the car door and asked for a ride. Shipman refused but rolled down the car window a few inches when Nowak started crying. Nowak then sprayed a chemical into Shipman's car, the affidavit said.

Shipman drove to the parking lot booth, and the police were called.

During a check of the parking lot, an officer followed Nowak and watched her throw away a bag containing the wig and BB gun. They also found a steel mallet, a 4-inch folding knife, rubber tubing, $600 and garbage bags inside a bag Nowak was carrying when she was arrested, authorities said.

Inside Nowak's vehicle, which was parked at a nearby motel, authorities uncovered a pepper spray package, an unused BB-gun cartridge, latex gloves and e-mails between Shipman and Oefelein. They also found a letter "that indicated how much Mrs. Nowak loved Mr. Oefelein," an opened package for a buck knife, Shipman's home address and hand written directions to the address, the arrest affidavit said.

Police said Nowak told them that she only wanted to scare Shipman into talking to her about her relationship with Oefelein and didn't want to harm her physically.

"If you were just going to talk to someone, I don't know that you would need a wig, a trench coat, an air cartridge BB gun and pepper spray," said Sgt. Barbara Jones, a spokeswoman for the Orlando Police Department. "It's just really a very sad case. ... Now she ends up finding herself on the other side of the law with some very serious charges."

If convicted of attempted kidnapping, Nowak could face a maximum of life in prison.

It was not immediately known whether Nowak had an attorney.

Oefelein and Shipman did not immediately return phone messages Monday night.

According to NASA's official biography, Nowak is married with three children. During her 13-day mission in July she operated the robotic arm during three spacewalks.

Oefelein is unmarried. He piloted the space shuttle Discovery in December. He has two children, according to a NASA biography.

Nowak and Oefelein were both first-time fliers during their shuttle missions last year. They trained together but never flew together.

DYING YOUNG
Boy, 16, charged in murder
One of the bicycle-riding bandits responsible for the death of an 18-year-old was arrested on Friday, Miami police said.
BY DAVID OVALLE
dovalle@MiamiHerald.com

The accused killer bawled at the police station.

His name is Tyree Patrick Walker and he rode a bicycle to escape the crime scene. A Northwestern High sophomore, Walker is just 16.

'He said, `All I did was snatch the chain. All I did was snatch the chain off her neck,' '' said his grandmother, Eartha Walker, 72, who spoke with him before he was booked.

Walker left the Miami police station Friday for jail, charged in the robbery of Jhonna Mercado and the killing of her boyfriend, 18-year-old Garvin Webster.

He didn't only tell his grandmother. First, he confessed to detectives, police said.

Though he did not pull the trigger, police say, Walker can still legally be held responsible for Webster's death because he took part in the robbery.

He is charged with first-degree murder and two counts of armed robbery.

''It's tragic that a 16-year-old is going to prison,'' said Miami Detective Delrish Moss. ``What's even more tragic is that an 18-year-old died for no reason.''

The identity of Walker's friend, whom police believe to be the shooter, was not known Friday evening.

Police have described the suspect as a young teenager, a little taller than Walker, with short dreadlocks. His grandmother believes he is a fellow student.

Homicide detectives believe Walker and his friend held up Webster and his girlfriend early Monday as they sat in her Lexus after a date.

They were parked outside his home on the 1900 block of Northwest 35th Street. The bicycle-riding boys yanked them from the car, demanding money and jewelry.

Walker took money from Mercado, 18. The other boy, armed with a gun, took Webster's possessions -- but shot him once in the chest.

Bloodied and gasping, Webster staggered toward his front door, knocked on the door and moments later died in his father's arms.

''We cooperated. It wasn't like we were fighting back,'' Mercado said Friday. ``I can't even sleep. I keep replaying it over and over.''

Walker was arrested by Detective Leo Tapanes.

Police on Friday were mum on how they tracked down Walker, whose grandmother admittedly knows little about her baby boy.

Eartha Walker raised him and his older brothers and sister because their parents died when he was a baby.

She knows Walker was on probation for assault and battery; he intervened in a fight for a friend, she said.

She knows he didn't own a bicycle.

But his brothers and sister owned four, which Friday rested against the living room wall of their Liberty City home.

Webster died just after 1:30 a.m. Monday. Eartha Walker doesn't know where her son was at that hour -- she was asleep in the back bedroom. Her grandson was home the rest of the week and seemed normal, she said.

And she knows this: Miami homicide detectives knocked on their door about 5 a.m. Friday.

More than three hours later, Walker was in the police station, where he tearfully admitted to his grandmother his role in the robbery.

''I don't how in the world he got mixed up with that boy,'' Walker said Friday night, talking about the alleged shooter. ``I'm heartbroken about this.''

Two miles away in Allapattah, Webster's family was heartbroken, too.

They prepared for his Friday night wake. Chairs lined the lawn. Friends milled about the lawn under a white tent. Family members combed their hair and dashed in and out of the bathroom. Garvin Webster Sr., the boy's father, was lagging to take a shower. He smiled a wide smile. The arrest gave him comfort.

''I know God was watching out for us. Everything will be OK,'' his father said.

Mercado emerged from a bedroom, dressed in black.

''No words can explain it. How could someone be so cold-blooded?'' she said.

Webster, she said, will always have a place in her heart.

He was a Jackson Memorial graduate who hoped to become a mechanic. He was also an aspiring rapper.

Sweet, caring, passive -- he didn't deserve to die, Mercado said.

''At least I know he is happy knowing they were caught,'' she said.

09:01 am - Curious....
4-year-old decapitated; cops seek father
By MIKE BAKER, Associated Press Writer

A mother found her 4-year-old daughter decapitated in her home, and police issued an arrest warrant for the girl's father.

John Patrick Violette, 37, was last seen driving a Buick station wagon near his home Friday afternoon in Clayton, about 15 miles southeast of Raleigh, said Clayton Police Chief Glen Allen. Violette's wife, Amber Violette, called 911 that evening, saying she had found her daughter, Katlin, with her head severed from her body, he said.

"When senseless violence occurs, it's tragic enough. But when it includes a child, it's even more tragic for the community," Allen said.

An arrest warrant has been issued for the father, and police planned to charge him with murder, Allen said. The State Bureau of Investigation was aiding in the search.

11:37 am - Why dont you go play in traffic...?
Mom charged for toddler's highway play.

A woman was charged with neglect Wednesday after prosecutors said she allowed her 3-year-old son to wander away from home and play along a busy interstate.

Stunned motorists found Damon Dyer, barefoot and wearing only a diaper and T-shirt, early Saturday while his mother slept in a nearby apartment on Indianapolis' west side.

Police said at least half a dozen cars and a semitrailer swerved into other lanes on Interstate 465 to avoid the child, who was not hurt. Drivers pulled over and took care of him until officers arrived.

Nancy Dyer, 30, whose son and a 2-year-old daughter were taken into protective custody, was charged with four counts of felony neglect.

"A couple of the charges are related to the condition of the home and another child that was still in the apartment," said Helen Marchal, a deputy Marion County prosecutor.

Investigators said the boy left the second-story apartment about 9 a.m. and walked down the stairs, around a fence and onto the highway about 200 yards away.

07:51 pm - child will not play "this little piggy" again...
Parents plead guilty to child desertion 1 hour, 22 minutes ago

The parents of an infant whose toes were gnawed off by a family pet pleaded guilty Wednesday to one count of child desertion.

Mary and Christopher Hansche also agreed to sign over their pets — a pit bull puppy and a ferret — to Bossier City for adoption. It hasn't been determined which pet bit the baby's toes off.

Judge John Robinson sentenced the couple to six months in jail, which was suspended to 48 days. The Hansches, who were jailed Dec. 11, were expected to be released as early as Wednesday night for good behavior, officials said.

"It was a horrible accident. I'm sorry it happened," the judge said. "I believe the plea agreement is appropriate. Your punishment will be ongoing every time you look at your baby's feet."

The Hansches were charged after they awoke Dec. 10 and discovered that three of their daughter's toes were gnawed off. Doctors were forced to remove another toe.

The child was placed into a grandparent's care. A juvenile court will determine final custody, authorities said.

Robinson also ordered the couple to complete a parenting class, pay a $100 fine and court fees, and undergo 60 days of probation.

08:24 pm - Mother May Have Microwaved Baby
Mother Accused Of Microwaving Her Baby To Death Dated: 11/27/2006 5:51:16 PM

By Libby Kirsch
2News

More than 15 months after a baby died, the mother has been arrested for murder. China Arnold is charged with aggravated murder in the death of her 28 day old daughter, Paris.

Grown over and neglected, Paris Talley's grave marker explains only a fraction of the baby's short and tragic life. Her death certificate, filed a month and a half after her August 2005 death, tells the rest. Homicide by hypothermia and thermal injury.

At the time, 26-year-old China Arnold denied involvement in Paris' death. But now investigators tell 2News they believe Arnold microwaved her infant daughter to death.

Both Arnold and Paris' father, Terrell Talley were both taken in for questioning by Dayton police after they brought Paris' lifeless body to Children's Medical Center on August 30th last year. Detectives booked Arnold into jail on a child endangering charge. She was released two days later after prosecutors failed to press charges.

Now, 15 months later, prosecutors want another chance. On Wednesday they filed an aggravated murder charge against Arnold.

Man who hid son's body gets 30 years

LANSING, Michigan (AP) -- A man who led police to his adopted 7-year-old son's body after claiming the boy had run away was sentenced Wednesday to 30 to 60 years in prison for second-degree murder.

Tim Holland cut a deal with prosecutors in September, agreeing to plead guilty to the charge and testify against his wife to avoid a life term.

"My life is over. My honor has been waylaid," a tearful Holland said during his sentencing hearing.

Holland and his wife, Lisa Holland, had claimed their adopted son Ricky had run away from home in July 2005, sparking an extensive nine-day search by 1,700 volunteers and hundreds of law enforcement officers.

In January, Tim Holland led police to Ricky's body in an Ingham County game area and admitted dumping his son's remains. He told authorities his wife hit Ricky in the head with a hammer while he was away from home.

Jury being picked to hear caged kids case

NORWALK, Ohio (AP) -- Jury selection began Tuesday in the trial of a couple accused of making some of their 11 adopted special needs children sleep in cages.

Michael and Sharen Gravelle are charged with 16 counts of felony child endangering and if convicted could face one to five years in prison and a maximum fine of $10,000 for each count.

The process of seating a jury in Huron County Common Pleas Court could take days, with 100 people yet to be questioned. Earlier, about 350 potential jurors were sent questionnaires, and 250 were weeded out because of bias or other issues, said Ken Myers, who represents Sharen Gravelle.

"There is no case. We're going to win this thing," said attorney Richard Drucker, who represents Michael Gravelle.

The youngsters were placed in foster care last fall after a county social worker likened the wood and chicken-wire enclosures to cages or kennels. The Gravelles have denied mistreating the children, who were ages 1 to 15 at the time.

Pelosi urged to skip over Alcee Hastings

BY LESLEY CLARK
lclark@MiamiHerald.com

A conservative watchdog group is urging likely House Speaker Nancy Pelosi to skip over Rep. Alcee Hastings, a Miramar Democrat, when it comes to selecting the next chairman of the House Intelligence Committee.

Better yet...

. . . The events occurred so long ago (the alleged conspiracy took place in 1981), the facts are so complex and the outcomes so antithetical (the jury acquitted Hastings; the judicial panel that investigated him, the House and the Senate concluded the opposite) that it's tempting to simply let bygones be bygones. After all, Hastings has been in Congress since 1992, on the intelligence committee since 1999. I don't worry that as chairman he'd suddenly be up for sale: If he could be entrusted with national security secrets as a committee member, why not as chairman?

But this was no ordinary crime, and Intelligence is no ordinary committee.

"My goodness gracious, when does it end? When does it end?" Hastings asked me yesterday in a long telephone interview. "It's no way that I can prove a negative. I can't go back and try to establish for everybody alive my bona fides. I've earned my stripes and I suffered through 9 3/4 years that would have crushed the average person, and fortunately for me I was not the kind of person that was crushed."
